To be fair, the majority of readers have probably had at least one collectible McDonald's item at some point in their lives. A Mayor McCheese water glass or a Moana Happy Meal toy are just two examples of the treasured mementos that fans of all ages have that are associated with the McDonald's brand. McDonald's is honoring this long-lasting love this month by launching the new Collector's Meal, which comes with six distinctive collectible cups meant to "inspire a new generation of fans."
The promotion begins on August 13 and is available for a limited time. It features a variety of combo meals that come with one of six collectible cups, each featuring memorable McDonald's items from different periods in its history.
Although it may seem a little self-referential to feature both Coca-Cola and McDonald's on McDonald's soft drink cups, it actually makes sense when you consider the strong brand identities of each. McDonald's has long established a roster of trademarked characters, such as Ronald McDonald, Birdie, Grimace, the Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, and Officer Big Mac, who have all become well-known figures in their own right.
As for Coca-Cola, the two companies entered into an agreement in 1955, and since then, they have mutually supported each other in becoming global brands. The New York Times has characterized their partnership as a "distinctive, mutually beneficial relationship," which makes it a natural choice to include them in this throwback campaign.
The remaining cups feature some of McDonald's most coveted collectibles over the years. Teenie Beanies, introduced as a Happy Meal toy in 1997, were incredibly popular, leading customers to line up outside the restaurant just to get them. A few years prior, the initial releases of Barbie figurines and Hot Wheels cars were so successful that McDonald's reintroduced them several times in the following years. Many of these items now command significant prices on the secondary market.
This new McDonald's Collector's Meal is unique in that it is available 24/7, including breakfast. Customers can acquire a collectible cup by purchasing either a combo meal that includes a Sausage Egg McMuffin, Hash Browns, and coffee or a combo meal with 10 Chicken McNuggets or a Big Mac with fries and a drink, depending on when they visit.
